Five Hundred at the Saxon David Higgs the chef at the Saxon needs no introduction.  As a multiple award-winning chef  he is extraordinarily creative using interesting ingredients and beautiful plating with amazingly innovative combinations. The 4 or 6 course set menu changes quite regularly. Reservations essential – fully booked well in advance. Bistro Michel Bistro Michel opened its doors in January 2015. It is owned by Michel Morand, former owner of Auberge Michel restaurant, which was the first restaurant in South Africa to be awarded the Five Star rating by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. Great food and wine. A favourite with BEE millionaires, politicians and the rich and famous who can afford its steep prices. The Four Seasons Hotel/The Westcliff. Stunning position overlooking the Zoo on Jan Smuts and views to the north-east. Very  upmarket with various different restaurants all with decks and stunning vistas. The Chef at the Westcliff is Dirk Gieselmann, former executive chef of three-Michelin-starred French restaurant L’Auberge de l’ill. +27 11 646-2400; 67 Jan Smuts Ave Bookings essential

WangThai,  Sandton has been the recipient of numerous awards including “top 100 restaurants” and “Diners Club wine list”. The food is beautifully presented and tastes as good as it looks. The Thai chefs were apparently specially recruited from some of Bangkok’s finest 5-star hotels. The food is out of this world.  Mandela Square 011 784 8484


Slightly further afield to the north near Fourways in northern Sandton is Le Soufflé Shop 9 & 10, Pineslopes Centre Cnr Witkoppen Road & The Straight Four Ways   Marc Guebert is one of Johannesburg’s longest serving chefs (of Ille de France fame)  All dishes are outstanding and his souffles are legendary  +27 11 465 4116
