The best restaurant neighbourhoods in Joburg’s suburbs

For recommended neighbourhood restaurants in neighbouring suburbs of Parkhurst, Parktown North and Greenside go to

In the neighbouring suburb of  Parkhurst , 4th Ave has become a favourite foodie haunt, but some of the best are not listed on the link above:

Rockets 011 880 6102  Cnr 4th Ave and 10th St Provides excellent gastro-pub fare. Really good hamburgers and thin crust pizzas, delicious baked potatoes with scrumptious fillings, a wide range of salads and entree dishes. Good food and excellent value.  Highly recommended

Vovo Telo  is in the Cobbles Centre Cnr 4th Ave and 11th St Parkhurst. 011 447 5939 Also casual fare but really generous helpings and very good value.  Although it has had patchy reviews I have always had good experiences at Vovo Telo as have guests from Liz at Lancaster who have eaten there.  If there are no tables available they used to take your cell phone number, (s0metimes things change?), advise that you wander down the street looking at the various shops and goodies on offer and then they phone you when a table becomes free. Hope they still do this as it is an excellent service. Great for lunches and casual suppers.

Bottega Very good bistro fare – pastas, salads, open sandwiches as well as more substantial meals  011 447-4448 open every night so good on Mondays when so many other places are closed.

Espresso café and bistro ; Always a safe bet but do not accept credit cards. Closed Mondays 011 447-8700

·    The WolfpackA buzzy burger bar. Opened August 2013 under the same owners who started the now well-known Cnr Café in Craighall Park. Open from Tuesday to Sunday (12pm to 12am). 011 447 7705.

B    Bistro Vine as its name suggests – good bistro fare. Get a sense of what they serve on 011 327 4558

Cornutti Make excellent pizzas and good bistro fare. The Illovo branch has been running for years. Cnr 12th St and 4th Ave 011 447 0669

Craft  is the new ‘in’ place to eat and drink -Lots of Craft beer to choose from 011 7887111 33, 4th Avenue

Parkhurst Square has several eateries which I haven’t eaten at yet but have had good reports:  Simply Asia (074 870 2506) and  Coobs Bistro (011 447 0710).

The Jolly Rodger As its name suggests – a typical English pub. Great place to watch any sporting events. Linked to Jolly Cool opposite which is open till late for things more substantial than beer and chips . Cr 4th Ave and 6th St

At the corner of  3rd Ave and 7th Ave Parktown North there’s the gastro pub The Foundry as well as some specialist steak eateries: The Local Grill (excellent steaks) and more everyday but very good steaks The Turn and Tender. See

At 43 7th ave is the very popular La Cucina di Ciro . Great setting, good food but very pricey. Opposite is The Full Stop which has wholesome ordinary food but a great outdoor courtyard with brazier fires in winter. Lovely on a summer’s evening or warm winter’s day.   And you won’t have to struggle to park as they have designated secure parking in a lot on the opposite side of the road.
