The 2017/2018 New York Met Opera season has just started and with it of course are the worldwide live screenings of the operas. Opera fans battle to get information on the local screenings at Cinema Nouveau, Rosebank as Sterkinekor no longer has a dedicated section/page for the opera season on their website. There have been lots […]
A rare opportunity to visit this special place in the Cradle of Humankind Do you know what a folly is (apart from various current heads of state)? And what is a potager? This is your chance to find out. And at the same time you can have a wonderful day out of Joburg and support […]
Kota Festival Soweto 16-17 September I love channel 702, although my listening is always very disjointed and haphazard as sadly I only listen to it when driving. I was fascinated the other day to hear Sidwell and Fikile being interviewed by Azania Mosaka about the Kota festival coming up in Soweto on the 16th […]
Children’s outings with a difference: June/July and August 2017 It’s holiday time again and I have a little person in my life who is going to have an operation on both his feet. He will be in casts and will not be allowed any weight-bearing for 6 weeks. That’s a long time for parents and […]
Jazz in Joburg Guests often ask where they can listen to jazz in Joburg and of course the Orbit in Braamfontein is the first place to go. Being in Braamfontein in the heart of the student area, there’s always a great buzz here. There’s jazz every night from 8.30. […]
Please please don’t miss Jemma Kahn in In Bocca al Lupo showing until 21st May at the Ramalao Makhene Theatre in Newtown. It is difficult to imagine what could rival ‘The Epicene Butcher’ and ‘We Didn’t Come to Hell for the Croissants’. But Jemma Kahn’s third kamishibai show is as consummate as the first 2. […]
Residential property Maboneng Precinct The development of residential accommodation in Maboneng has exploded exponentially. In 2008 Jonathan Liebmann bought the DF Corlett construction offices and so Arts on Main was born. While this led to further remarkable urban renewal projects, the downside is that the upgrading and refurbing of inner city buildings often displaces previously […]
Hamlet at Pieter Toerien Theatre, Monte Casino until 21st May I love South African creativity. I and two friends went walkabout from our desks and joined a number of English teachers and a whole lot Matrics from various different schools (Hamlet is their Matric setwork this year), to see the first performance of […]
Shakespeare with a cast of 3 actors Back in 2011 I saw the Tragedy of Richard III at the Market Theatre, directed by Fred Abrahamse. Here 3 actors played multiple parts in a play about Shakepeare’s Richard III. David Dennis played The Duke of Buckingham ; The Duchess of York; Queen Margaret; Edward IV and […]
Guests love our noticeboard with all its local information. Liz’s current Pick of the Week mentions two art exhibitions. Brett Murray has a large sculpture exhibition showing at Circa/Everard Read on Keyes Art Mile. At Goodman Gallery, the entire gallery has been turned into a surreal night time beach space. There’s beach sand on the floor and lounger chairs for viewers to watch Mikhael Subotksy’s complex 45 minute 3 screen video installation.
