Residential property Maboneng Precinct The development of residential accommodation in Maboneng has exploded exponentially. In 2008 Jonathan Liebmann bought the DF Corlett construction offices and so Arts on Main was born. While this led to further remarkable urban renewal projects, the downside is that the upgrading and refurbing of inner city buildings often displaces previously […]
Little Maestros: introducing children to musical instruments Little Maestros is a wonderful initiative to introduce small children to musical instruments: what they can do, how they sound, how they work and what they can play. Once a month Little Maestros holds a one-hour concert which is a very interactive affair. While there’s a lot of […]
Tour of Joburg with JDA arranged by Laurice Taitz I was delighted when Laurice Taitz, the mover and shaker behind Johannesburg In Your Pocket, and guru of all that’s happening in Jozi, asked me to join a Joburg tour. She arranged it with the Johannesburg Development Agency (thanks Nomalizo) to show various journalists, tourism professionals […]
EDITED MAY 2022. Sadly Piece has closed completely and Art Eye as moved north to Fourways area. Ellis House is home to various artists studios and on Sunday 29th May 2022 there will be an open day. Somehow this post was written back in December 2016, and got lost in drafts. So apologies that it’s […]
By now followers will be getting to know that I am the QoG aka Queen of Grids. I make sense of things in overall summaries either through spider diagrams (initial creative explorations) or through grids (final arrangements). Irene Dairy Farm, a working dairy farm 45 minutes from Liz at Lancaster, has been in the Van Der Byl family for 5 generations. In the past people could go to the diary to buy milk but now the farm is opened up as a country destination with 2 restaurants and a shop (where you can still buy milk but not at 45c per gallon!) It is also now a very popular conference and wedding venue.
Public schools in Gauteng break up on 31st March until 18th April. This means it’s time to update the last now-outdated PPP [aka Parent Protection Programme]. In addition to the various child-centred places I have written about in previous posts, there are a couple of new ones I’ve discovered.
With only 3 of us ‘on duty’ over a week-end at Liz at Lancaster, instead of the usual 4, I often miss the Parkrun in Delta Park on a Saturday morning. It starts at 8 which usually clashes with breakfasts and preparing of invoices for check-out. I’m always sad when I do, as it’s one of my favourite weekly activities. The field of some 1000 odd meet at the Delta Environmental Centre.
MUST- SEE JOZI SITE – CRADLE OF HUMANKIND Guests who stayed at Liz at Lancaster recently visited Origins Museum and Sterkfontein out in the Cradle and came back full of excitement about our rich hominid history. I told them how I am constantly amazed at the opportunities we have in South Africa to explore our […]
Jozi heritage site: Windybrow A few months ago I set off to Doornfontein on the edge of Hillbrow, to join a tour of the revamped and restored building which I used to know as the Windybrow Theatre. (My source of all that is really new and happening within the city is often Laurice Taitz of […]
