I and the small people in my life have discovered a new Parks’ gem (well actually their mother did but I’m taking the credit here!)
The Noisy Rooster Keyes Ave Rosebank

In June 2016 I wrote a blog about things to do with kids in Joburg and I mentioned Serendipity, a play centre at 48 Keyes Ave Rosebank, which had nice staff but was getting a little ‘tired around the edges’. Well, it has been reincarnated by new owners as The Noisy Rooster. The equipment is being upgraded and it is delightful.

Farm animals are always a win

Not least of all because the owners live at Heversham Park Farm in Walkerville and so they bring various four-legged attractions which the kids love. These include 2 wonderful little hogs, (and yes we were told they were hogs … although I don’t think there is any difference between a hog and a pig, apart from the word) , plus a couple of rabbits and two kid goats who refuse to stay in their pen.
Excellent home-cooked food with fresh ingredients – highly recommended
And best of all there is a really fabulous menu. The owner, who is a mother and qualified teacher, became increasingly frustrated at the lack of children’s play facilities where wholesome, healthy, tasty food is offered. Being a seasonal menu it changes constantly.

Only free range products are used all of which are either produced on their farm or sourced from the neighbours. They make a mean banting burger on a giant mushroom ‘bun’ and I had a delicious chicken pie. Presentation is fabulous – how appealing are these fish-fingers and chips? There are all sorts of other offerings including quiche, salads, pizzas, sandwiches and tramezzini with various fillings. I just hope the menu isn’t too ambitious to sustain.
Programmed activities – but contact them to check
The Noisy Rooster offers various programs during the week (Tuesday – Sunday), and school holidays. As these are constantly changing they recommend that you check their website for details. Regular features include story time, plays, dress up days, dough making, art and creative activities, Disney movies, pets’ corner, jungle gyms, sand pit, as well as various other playground essentials. The second time we went, one of my grandsons was supervised in the indoor playroom by a staff member while he made a wonderful dinosaur plate with all sorts of glittering goodies. Such fun!
They also offer a purpose built children’s party area plus they cater for Stork Parties, where Mums can enjoy the get-together while Noisy Rooster staff look after the little ones. This is a win-win.
