Shared studio spaces in downtown Jozi and surrounds
For emerging artists who do not yet have access to the stables of big-name commercial galleries, making art can be a lonely career often with very little return and restricted options for affordable studio space. So Jozi has seen a quite recent rise in unused buildings and spaces being converted into studio spaces where emerging artists can interact with each other, be creative in a shared spaces, and have access to a platform where they can exhibit cutting edge art.
Open Studios Joburg
On the weekend of 28th and 29th May, Open Studios will be holding 2 days of art in the city. An event to diarize is 7 buildings 100 studios. The sites are: August House, Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, Ellis House, Living Artists Emporium, LAPA at Breezeblock, Transwerke Studios and Victoria Yards. The studios will be linked via a free shuttle service that will allow visitors to safely explore the city. Three shuttles will move in a loop between the buildings, with transport available every 15 minutes.
Access to all events is FREE, but visitors must register for each venue that they wish to attend. Book at Quicket Selected studios will open on the 2 different days.

And best of all, Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure will be part of the event on Saturday 28 May, with free shuttles stopping at their restaurant/bar/gallery. You can pop in for a drink or lunch (although it’s best is to book), and then take a shuttle to the art studios at Constitution Hill, Breezeblock and Bag Factory. While attendance to art studios and use of the shuttles will be FREE, it is essential to register on Quicket to attend this event.
As exciting is that the team of JoburgPlaces/Charlie&Gerald’s Town Treasure will be hosting the Open Studios Joburg After Party from 3pm on Sunday 29 May. This exciting event will take place at a wonderful, hidden venue in Judith’s Paarl.
