Historically, SA Tourism has always reported on total visitor arrivals (excluding workers and contract workers), because they were not able to remove day visitors from overnight visitors (tourists) from the data released by Stats SA. The release of the January 2009 tourism figures marked the first time that Stats SA has been able to report on actual tourist arrivals, as defined by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), as opposed to total arrivals. The table below shows the new more accurate tourist figures along with the previous figures of all foreign travelers.
