Every now and again I feel the need to sneak out of my office at Liz at Lancaster and hunker down with a book or some writing over a cup of coffee and even sometimes a light meal. Higher Ground, St Stithians College, Randburg
We met at Higher Ground which is located in the grounds of St Stithians College in Randburg. And there are 3 very special things about it.
- Apart from a very nice menu and good food, it has one of the most stunning views of Joburg you will get anywhere in the city. In one panoramic sweep you look south across to Sandton Central and the older Joburg Central to the right out of frame. Brixton (with Brixton tower and the SABC building) is even further right/east.
- The tables are generously spaced and the noise levels are not clamorous as in so many popular restaurants where you can’t even hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation
- And there are comfortable couches and coffee tables out on the deck in the sun – under umbrellas for summer but just right to bask in the warm sun on a Highveld winter’s day.

There are 2 entrances to St Stithians – off Braam Fischer or Peter Place. But be warned, there is no signposting once in the grounds so either Google Map it or ask at the gate.
Higher Ground opens 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. (No dinner Sunday)
