There are institutions and there are Institutions … and one of Craighall Park’s Institutions is Delta Café. The brainchild of Daniel Basch, it started as a small café in a repurposed cottage overlooking Delta Park and the spruit, near the famous “Blue Bridge” (repaired and back in use after bad flood damage in a heavy storm in March 2025).

Daniel has taken this venue through many iterations. Over time he has expanded the seating, built a playground loved by youngsters, made a covered deck with pizza oven, extended the lawned area with an outside drinks section, made space for parked bikes to cater for those after their morning park rides, developed a small area for private functions, and now added DQ Adults Only space!

The Deck

With views over the Spruit, the park and amazing sunsets, the Deck has a bar and pizza oven which churn out Delta’s authentic Neopolitan pizzas. There’s a great kids menu.

It’s become a well-known family space with kids being able to play on the lawn or in the playground area under the careful overseeing of the wonderful childminders Esthnut and Pretty.
All things meet in the Centre
The central covered space overflows onto the outside covered extension and then onto the lawned area.

“Lost dogs and crazy people”
This category of Daniel’s (he has a wicked sense of humour) can be found or mislaid (you make the choice which is applicable) at the outside bar known as The Shed on the lawn. Patrons can take drinks and eats to enjoy in picnic style.

Special functions
There is a lovely dedicated covered space known as The Wave where guests can overflow into an open area. When there is no function, this open space doubles up as a place for boule/petanque.

DQ Adults only
Strictly NO DOGS and NO CHILDREN. Parents and those without children can socialize in peace! This is Daniel’s newest space to add to all that is already on offer. A cosy lounge area adjoins a newly appointed bar area.

And let’s not forget the gardens …they are fabulous

Delta Café has SOUL
Somehow Delta Café manages to feel a world away from Johannesburg – relaxed, family-friendly and faintly rural, with not a whiff of pretension.
