Family bonding at Colour Café around the corner from Liz at Lancaster

Get Creative at Color Café

If you’re looking for something to do with kids of all ages (and for adults of all ages for that matter) as well as a little escape from the hustle and bustle of Joburg, Color Café, is just the place. It’s tucked away in Hyde Square (not to be confused with nearby Hyde Park), next door to the fabulous Cremelat which I blogged about some time ago. It’s really great fun for kids, adults, and anyone in between.

Tables ready to be set up with brushes, pencils and water. You choose the item you want to decorate and the paints …. and just get started.

How It Works

It is best to make an appointment if you want to go over a weekend as it gets very busy. Color Café will set up your table ready in advance for you. And you have around two hours of absorptive play.  You begin by choosing a piece of raw ceramic to paint. There are loads of pristine white items on the shelves to choose from, all priced per item: large plates and platters,  teapots, bowls of all shapes and sizes, figurines and home décor items.

My grandaughter would jump for joy at the thought of painting her own unicorn!

Color Café provide the paint and any stencils you might want to use.  After you have chosen your paints (loads of choice) and any stencils you might want to use, you are ready to start. I was really boring and chose stencilling letters!!

As pencil undersketching does not come out in the firing and there are staff members on hand to help with any questions.

Concentration

The couple of hours pass very quickly.  You leave your master- and mistresspieces for the Colour Café team to glaze and fire and collect them when they are ready a few weeks later.

How beautiful is this plate? One of those hanging on the wall which serves as inspiration for us less talented mortals.
And another beautiful plat

Color Cafe is fun for private parties & team builds: they offer packages for birthdays, baby showers, hens’ parties, and more.   And yes, there’s a café menu, so you can enjoy coffee and a snack.   So next time you want some family time and a break from screens – head to Colour Café and paint your own little piece of happy.
