From small market stall to Cremelat Cheese Factory

Cremelat Deli in Hyde Park

Three decades ago, (a sobering reminder of time flying), I first discovered the small stall selling the most amazing cheeses at the Bryanston Organic Market

Nobody really knew the name of the stall and numbering was all very haphazard (I’m sure still is)… it was simply known as THE cheese stall. It was easily recognized by the bank of customers at the tiny counter and the snaking queue. Nothing much has changed except now I nip down the road to neighbouring Hyde Park to a very small, crowded shop which is always busy (especially on a Saturday morning) to see Matthew and Antony. Customers still chat to each other while waiting to be served or to pay; exchange ideas on what cheeses and products to buy; have tastes of cheeses and newly arrived delicacies;  have terrible buyer’s envy of everybody else’s purchases; and spend WAY more than they intended to.

Cremelat was started by Claudio and Margaret Giustizieri in 1993. As with many businesses with successful products, it grew and grew until 3 years later they moved to bigger premises in Kensington where they could increase their products on offer: that standard Italian deli fare of cold meats, coffee, pasta, tomatoes, wine, olive oil, panettone’s and panforte’s.  But 5 years later they were on the move again, opening the Cremelat Cheese factory in the Greenhill Industrial Estate. But like Jack and the beanstalk, Cremelat just kept growing.  The in-house restaurant La Cucina opened in 2010 . More expansions in 2016 led to an open kitchenl and in 2018 to the bakery La Panetteria (the bakery) which produced freshly baked ciabatta, sourdough, focaccia, etc daily. And then they spread their wings even further and opened a small store in Dunkeld/Hyde Park border .. just down the road from Liz at Lancaster.

Cremelat in HydePark, border Dunkeld . There is a small pavement section where you can enjoy a sit-down cappucino and a fresh ciabbata filled with cold meats, cheese and grilled veges
There are are loads of bottled anti-pastas, pestos and sauces
And their  delicious grilled veges are prepared in the headquarters and delivered to Hyde Park daily. Make sure to order it you aren’t going to get there early as as they often run out
Spolit for choice
And there is always great friendly, efficient personal service from Antony (right) and Matthew, who happened also to have represented South Africa in, of all sports …. ice hockey!

You can find Cremelat at Hyde Square Shopping Centre, 285 Jan Smuts Ave Corner Jan Smuts Ave and North Rd, Hyde Park Phone on 060 837 8261
